Leather & Lace by Samantha Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A chance meeting is all it took…
Kristen Anders had been bitten once and was not looking for a man in her life. Devon Sawyer was certainly not anticipating anything more than a date and a good time but he hadn’t bargained on “Ninja-girl” crawling into more than his bed. An unlikely pairing, the two battle each other and danger from outside their circle of family and friends. Friendship, passion and intrigue blend together into a romance that is anything but smooth sailing.
I enjoyed this first book in a series centered on a group of friends, all ex-military team members, who each bring their own unique talents and personalities. Kristen and Devon were strong and vulnerable in turn though their strengths and weaknesses seemed to complement each other well. I liked the story being told from differing points of view as it gave more insight into the character’s thoughts and feelings.
The writing style is very detail-oriented so if you are looking for a BDSM primer than this one is a good place start. It is chock-a-block full of protocol and the language associated with the lifestyle. Having read many such books I have to admit to skimming over some explanations which seemed repetitive to me but I did appreciate the clear and concise way the author explained the ins and outs. While the story revolves mainly on the budding romance between Kristen and Devon, there is definitely exploration happening which seemed a bit out of step with the unfolding love story.
A good first entry in the series with solid characters and a clear, concise writing style. A higher emotional connection to the characters will easily bump this rating higher so I’m looking forward to what the author has in store for us and the rest of the team.
