Diane's Review ~ Scarless & Sacred by Bethany-Kris

Scarless & Sacred (The Chicago War, #3)Scarless & Sacred by Bethany-Kris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“The Outfit is full of scars and secrets…”

Could there be even more twists and turns and emotional wrenches in the third installment of this series? Considering the previous books were chock-full of them it’s hard to imagine, but true! This is not a stand-alone so you will want to read the first deliciously tense books in this series first before tackling this emotional story focused on Evelina Conti and Theo DeLuca this time around.

“Babe, I’m a terribly careful man. It’s my job to be careful. Otherwise, I’d be dead.”

Family is everything so when you are called to do your duty, you do it. What happens when duty flies against your instincts and the people you love? Eve and Theo’s families belong to the Outfit but there is no peace between them. Much has gone on, blood has been spilled, and yet the game continues more deadly than ever. Theo’s life has not been easy and his past governs and haunts everything he does. Regret and anger vies with loyalty and he struggles to do the right thing. Eve is his constant but even she can’t fight his demons. Eve knows what it is important and despite danger and tight family ties fights with him.

>“I would rather love a man entirely. Hidden monsters, scars, secrets and all. .. I don’t want a piece of some man’s heart. I want his whole heart, even if that means holding the pieces of it together.”

The revelations and twists to this story never stop! This is not a gentle story but an in your face, balls to the wall, nail-biter! Gritty, violent and filled with rage, those moments are intertwined with tender glimpses of personal discovery and sacrifice. Eve and Theo seem to encapsulate so much of the struggle that goes on. Theo is good at what he does, but what he does is not good. To toe the line, Eve must hurt those she loves. To live your life, each moment, with that kind of struggle and tension, well, medication would surely be required! This series is all about people – the good and the bad – and this installment seemed to really dig into the heart of what it means to be part of this ‘family’. Emotional and gut-wrenching, I don’t know if my heart can take another book in this series… but I can’t wait to find out!
