 Dark Romance Novel, sensitive topics with religious undertones (hope in the face of hell).

 Finding herself stranded in a new city, eighteen-year-old Ember Bloom thought she’d reached her all time low. She was wrong. A mindless walk to a dead-end job landed her in the path of her gambling fathers’ enemies. Her only defense was a stranger, Slayton Winslow, a known enforcer and fighter—rumored to be Odin’s prince, underground royalty.

 On sight, Slayton stole her breath and rushed her heart. His enigmatic attraction to her and how stoically he shielded her only churned Ember’s attraction to the bad boy who had given her safe haven in a real life hell. The draw to him gave her a reason to fight, to awaken. She knew every second could be their last in the city seeded with treacherous deceit and life threatening power plays.

Our Review:
Dark, brutal and edgy yet completely beautiful at times...a must read!

I love the dark side, there is something about the depravity that draws me in but what I love even more is when there is something that makes a story stand out and makes you take notice. There was something about this story that did just that. The characters were unique in their own ways. Slayton; silent but deadly, calm yet completely unhinged and raw yet vulnerable. Ember; quiet and observant, a girl with a deep sense of love and forgiveness for those who may not deserve it, and fearless. She looked evil and in face and then would walk right through it.

"Everyone wants a bad boy until they realize they aren't really bad - some unattainable alpha - but just a boy with layers of hell that have to be dealt with."

This book while dealing with the underbelly of society and all of the brutalness that entails also has this edge of hope that makes the story memorizing. Even in the worst of moments there is this faithful hope that things may turn out alright. I liked that this story was not wrapped up in a pretty bow, it showed that life is a fight and battle and even in fiction struggles happen. This story had the unexpected and air of mystery to it. Slayton was broken and dark;

"It was almost like a crush, but more so because a crush was an idea, this boy was a brutal reality."

a soldier to toy with, a fighter with a black soul. You can't help but feel deeply for him even when his actions are less than admirable.

Ember while dealt a crappy hand does her best with what she has;

"It made my chest ache and everything inside of me begged to get as close to her as I could, I wanted to be consumed by the purity I felt between us, this undefined rush that gave reason to the insanity of my life."

her light is bright and faith is unwavering. While characters like her tend by naive, she is anything but, while sometimes her actions are questionable she doesn't go in with blinders or rose colored glasses.

I enjoyed every step of this journey and I know a story has me when I cringe and turn away from the words only to turn right back around and get sucked back in. I enjoyed this author's storytelling ability and while is my first from her it won't be my last.

  About Jamie Magee:

 Jamie Magee has always believed that each of us have a defining gift that sets us apart from the rest of the world, she has always envied those who have known from their first breath what their gift was. Not knowing hers, she began a career in the fast paced world of business. Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she'd never been, introduce her to people she's never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.
