Review

Intense, dystopian romance…
As with most fiction, the dystopian genre can run the gamut from stomach-churning reality (shades of the Walking Dead or Mad Max) to comedic, ruffled normality (Idiocracy). This series seems to cover most of the gamut as it outlines the struggle to survive in a post-plague world. Somehow, Abby, Airen and Joseph find each other in the midst of this devastation and their story encompasses family, love and the harsh circumstances they must overcome and embrace…
I love how the things we struggle with today in our technological world still hold true in a world where everything has been stripped down to the most elemental. Love, loss, the need to connect with others, are part and parcel of the human experience and, twitter or no twitter, communication is just as hard as ever. Abby has fought to keep her small family healthy and happy with the shreds of normalcy she can create. She is strong yet vulnerable – self-esteem is still a struggle even in this new world – as she opens her family, and heart, to first Airen and then Joseph…
This story is long, encompassing three full-length books, and their journey is filled with challenge after challenge. They have to not only work through their complicated relationships but also ensure their families continue to thrive. As with any civilization, there are the good and bad elements within it. In a world with scarce resources – and no enforceable laws – one has to be vigilant and ever ready to make the tough choices.
This was an intense journey with lots of twists and turns. I struggled to completely engage with the characters with the matter of fact retelling distant at times when I wanted to be closer, to feel more of the sadness, the horror, the anger they were experiencing. They said the right things, they did the right things, yet their pain and their happiness seemed just a little removed. Saying that, however, the story kept my attention, concluding with an epilogue that I knew (I just knew) I should have avoided. Ending on a bittersweet tone, I look forward to more…
