Rooke by Callie Hart
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
What an exciting and unexpected story. It was a little dark, gritty, steamy and suspenseful all rolled into one. I am not a stranger to this author, so I thought I knew what to kind of expect. Well...I was wrong there were so many parts of this story that I didn't see coming, which made it even better.
Rooke is an interesting character; young, tough, a bad-boy, self-assured, but an old soul. He has not made the best choices with his life but he is fierce and protective of what is his. Some of his behaviors are strange and don't always make the most sense but that is part of what makes him so unique.
"Great. Feel free to swoon over me. I know I look good in black."
Sasha is a broken woman; she is very good at adulting to the rest of the world but inside she is a mess. She is haunted by her past, in a place in her life that is at a standstill, and at times it seems like she is just going through the motions. She has little excitement until she topples into Rooke one fateful afternoon.
Rooke knows what he wants, Sasha thinks she knows what she wants and for some reason they just don't see eye-to-eye. One of things that I really liked was that Rooke was open about who he is and what he wants. He's not about playing games. Sasha is older and has a hard time wrapping her brain around the idea of him, let alone the age gap.
And now you think you know how it will all play out...and you would be wrong. This book takes you places that I least expected and it had me glued to the pages. I read this in a day and was irritated when it was time to put it down so I could eat and do some adulting myself. It was definitely a story that I was completely wrapped up in. There was action, a number of laughs, intense moments, a bunch of tension and steam and just an all-around good read.
