Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience. “You’re pregnant.” “It’s a boy.” “Your son needs a heart transplant.” Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Lies. Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun. Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky. “He’s gone.” For ten years, the darkness consumed me. In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise. “Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

What a hell of a way to end a book...

I read this book yesterday, it was one of those; "don't bother me I'm reading books." It was full of emotion, a bit of suspense, a really good handful of laughs, sexy chemistry and then an end that will knock your socks off.

Stick and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me. Lies.

For ten years Charlotte has been living in the dark, just going through the motions. Smiling when she needs, saying words when she needs to, going to work because she needs to, but she is stuck still while the world moves on. She can be distant and cold. She doesn't really have any friends and she hasn't really dealt with her tragedy. She is also actually quite funny with a very dry sense of humor.

You own a restaurant?

Words that will change his life forever. They seem so simple right? But they are not. Parker is no stranger to the darkness that can eat away at a person. He knows this from experience, from living it and breathing it. When he sees that same hollowness in Charlotte he becomes drawn, like their darkness calls to each other. He isn't quite as distant as Charlotte because he wasn't given that option but he too is just going through the motions to make it through the day-to-day. And he too has quite the sense of humor, he is endearing and funny, caring and loving, he is that person who just knows what to be in the moment.

Together they become "Just a little company in the darkness."

Both of these characters have stories that are soul crushing and quite emotional. Even my black heart was moved by their lives. They have lived in the dark and together maybe they can find a speckle of light that is until words become their ruin.

I am a huge fan of this author, her writing is engaging and she seamlessly takes you from heart hurting to giggling in mere pages. She didn't make the past overly dramatic and even though it was awfully horrific there wasn't unnecessary drama added. The events stood on their own and made my heart bleed just fine. The pain and emotions the characters felt were palpable To say I need book two would be an understatement. You know you are effected when you check both of your reading devices to make sure there wasn't a mistake and then stare off into space because you can't quite process what just went down, even if you are kind of expecting something. Bring on book two right now!

You won't want to miss this amazing series!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children. Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person. She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
